Happy Holidays!!

Wow! I cannot believe the time is already here! The kindergarten students have been learning about holidays celebrated all around the world. They loved using their passports and traveling to many different countries. They even had time to make a hand-made gift for their loved ones (I hope the gifts got home safely without any cracks).

I just wanted to take an opportunity to say THANK YOU!!! (for all of the fun and thoughtful gifts you presented me and our classroom last week) and HAPPY HOLIDAYS! to all of my students and their families! I hope you each have a relaxing, safe and very splendid holiday celebration with family and friends!

Take care and I look forward to seeing you back at school on January 4th!

UpDaTeS:

The kindergarten students had a good first two days last week, I hope we can continue with that in our first five-day week ahead! We are still learning the routines of the classroom and remembering our responsibilities. On Monday, Sept. 14th, our principal, Mrs. Swanson, will introduce the new Character Ed. theme for the coming year, the students are going to love it! We will also begin reviewing and learning the letters M and S. Along with some new vocabulary with words such as:
Complained, Talent, Confident, Reverse, Ability and Encourage.

Also parents, so you are aware, the kindergarten teachers will be doing assessments during the morning on Thurs. Sept. 17th. I will be in the class pulling students one at a time to find out which language and math skills they know and a substitute will be teaching just for the morning.
Hope you all had a wonderful weekend! It was great to see some of you at the Welcome Back BBQ last Friday!
Thanks for your support!

This week has already been very busy (and it is currently only Tuesday!) Wednesday (tomorrow) please remind your child to wear his/her Blue Ribbon Tie-dye T-shirt to school for the all-school photo. If it is dirty, don't worry about it, we don't mind! :-) If you can't find it, just wear a sky-blue shirt of any kind.

Also, please remember, our school does not have air conditioning, so make sure your child dresses for the weather (it looks like tomorrow will be another t-shirt and shorts kind of day). Students are allowed to wear flip-flops or sandals to school, but make sure they have an appropriate pair of running shoes for P.E. to change into.

As the school year is winding down, here are a couple of reminders for the days to come:

Wed. May 20th: All of the kindergarteners will get to meet the four first grade teachers

Fri. May 22nd: Yearbooks will be passed out (to those students who bought them) and we will have a signing party. (Students who did not buy a yearbook, will get a paper with the Shirley Hills logo on it for friends to sign.)

A few updates.....

Hello Parents/Guardians!!

I just wanted to give you a few updates........

1. For one of our fun Valentine activities/centers for the day will involve several pieces of bulk candy. If you would be willing to donate a bag of bulk candy it would be much appreciated and then I will cover the rest myself. Thank you! (Candies such as Tootsie Rolls, Starburst, Smarties, Etc. would be great!)

2. Please make sure to send back your child's ziploc bag of 100 things for the 100th day of school by Thursday February 19th.

3. Conferences are coming up at the end of February. I sent a piece of paper with the date and time of your child's conference in their Friday Folder last week. I am pretty sure I was able to accommodate everyone's request of day and time, but if there is a conflict, please contact me and we can reschedule.

4. I am looking for some parent volunteers to help me with Kindergarten Scrapbooks. :-) Don't worry, you do not have to be creative, just willing to glue and cut. The work can also be done here at school or you can take it home and then return it to me. I have all the supplies, I just need some helping hands. :-)

5. We do have a field trip coming up on Wednesday, March 11th to the Lowry Nature Center. Our class will be going in the morning from 9-11:30am and will be back in time for lunch at school. I have two parents who signed up to chaperon at the beginning of the year. We can only have two parents from each class ride the bus with us, but if more parents want to come, you are more than welcome to meet us at the Lowry Nature Center and spend the morning with us, we just wouldn't have room for more people to ride with us on the bus. I hope you understand. If you have any further questions, please contact me.

I think that is all for now! :-) Thank you for reading and for your continued support throughout this school year!

Happy 2009 and Welcome Back!!! Week of Jan. 5-9

Hello and Welcome back!

I hope you were all able to rest, relax and enjoy special moments with family and friends over the past two weeks.

One of my new year's resolutions is to become more technologically advanced. :-) I realize there is always more to learn when it comes to technology, but now that we have a SMART board in our classroom, I want to learn even MORE and share the amazing things that this technology can do with the kindergarten students. Also, to make life a little easier, I will not be using our classroom website anymore. Instead, I will only post information on this blog so please be sure to check this blog weekly for any updated information. (I will put a link to the classroom website, so you can be sure to access this blog from our school and classroom website.)

After resting and spending quality time with my family, I am geared up to start the "New Year" and get back to a daily schedule.
This coming week, we have quite a bit going on.

Here is a glimpse at our specialist schedule and a few other events:

Monday: Art, having Character Class (Honesty) with Mrs. Swanson and we will be
celebrating Sami's Birthday!

Tuesday: P.E.

Wednesday: Library (remember to return your books!) and Music
and we will be celebrating Cody's Birthday!

Thursday: Art

Friday: P.E.

This coming week we will also be welcoming a new friend to our classroom. We are looking forward to having Tsione join us! We will also be concentrating on our first vowel of the year - letter A. We will be concentrating on the sounds the letter A makes and how to write it correctly. With the "new year" we will also be starting a new math chapter! Chapter 5 will be reviewing some concepts we have learned, but will also start introducing some geometry. In computer, we will be starting Type to Learn, which is a program that helps students understand the keys of the keyboard.
In the next few weeks I will be assessing the students to see where they are at with their reading skills, letter identification and letter sounds. These assessments will be used for upcoming report cards and will also help me identify our reading groups as we begin "Guided Reading" in a couple weeks. Look for more information to come on how these groups will work in the coming weeks.
