Star of the Week!: Eyan will continue to share the three days of school this week because he missed three of his sharing days last week.

Sight Word Being Introduced: his

During our three days of school this week, we will be doing some fun winter projects, reviewing some of the letters & letter sounds we have already learned. Along with reviewing sight words and expectations for our centers and reading groups.
The students have gotten off to a great start with their medallions and are loving the chance to do them.
We will also continue to work on symmetry and finish up Chapter 5 in Math this week because our day off last week changed our schedule a little bit.
As the weather has gotten a bit warmer, hopefully the students will get to go outside this week. Thank you so much for sending all of the students' warm gear each day - it is MUCH APPRECIATED!!

A few requests:
  • We are out of snacks for students who may forget every once in awhile. If you could send in one box of crackers, Cheez-its, graham crackers, fruit snacks, etc. that we can keep in the classroom, this should help us get through until the end of the year - thank you!
  • Please don't forget to send in your conference slips with your 1st and 2nd choice of when you would like a conference for your child towards the end of February.

STAR of the WEEK! : Eyan

This week we will be practicing the learning centers and slowly getting into our Guided Reading Groups. We have also switched our schedule a little bit in the afternoon to make sure the students have enough time to get through their centers and I can pull my reading groups each day. The students are excited to start this process and so am I!

Also, it is much belated, but finally the Medallion Ribbons are up and ready to go. I realize my intent was to start them before the holiday break, but things got a little busier than anticipated. I had two students receive medallions today - one of them counted to 100! And the other wrote her first AND last name! YEA - way to go!!!

We have also added another sight word this week : "My"
We will continue talking about geometry in math, so you may hear your child coming home and labeling things around the house using words such as "spheres," "cubes," "cylinders," and "cones." Within Chapter 5 in Math we will also begin talking about symmetry!

As the weather gets colder, please be sure to send your child to school each day with warm coats, snow pants, boots, warm mittens and a hat. Even if it is only for 15 minutes, we hope to get outside and run around!

Lastly, a few requests.........
  • We are out of snacks for students who may forget every once in awhile. If you could send in one box of crackers, fruit snacks, etc. that we can keep in the classroom, this should help us get through until the end of the year - thank you!

Thank you for all of your help!
Have a Great Week!

Happy 2009 and Welcome Back!!! Week of Jan. 5-9

Hello and Welcome back!

I hope you were all able to rest, relax and enjoy special moments with family and friends over the past two weeks.

One of my new year's resolutions is to become more technologically advanced. :-) I realize there is always more to learn when it comes to technology, but now that we have a SMART board in our classroom, I want to learn even MORE and share the amazing things that this technology can do with the kindergarten students. Also, to make life a little easier, I will not be using our classroom website anymore. Instead, I will only post information on this blog so please be sure to check this blog weekly for any updated information. (I will put a link to the classroom website, so you can be sure to access this blog from our school and classroom website.)

After resting and spending quality time with my family, I am geared up to start the "New Year" and get back to a daily schedule.
This coming week, we have quite a bit going on.

Here is a glimpse at our specialist schedule and a few other events:

Monday: Art, having Character Class (Honesty) with Mrs. Swanson and we will be
celebrating Sami's Birthday!

Tuesday: P.E.

Wednesday: Library (remember to return your books!) and Music
and we will be celebrating Cody's Birthday!

Thursday: Art

Friday: P.E.

This coming week we will also be welcoming a new friend to our classroom. We are looking forward to having Tsione join us! We will also be concentrating on our first vowel of the year - letter A. We will be concentrating on the sounds the letter A makes and how to write it correctly. With the "new year" we will also be starting a new math chapter! Chapter 5 will be reviewing some concepts we have learned, but will also start introducing some geometry. In computer, we will be starting Type to Learn, which is a program that helps students understand the keys of the keyboard.
In the next few weeks I will be assessing the students to see where they are at with their reading skills, letter identification and letter sounds. These assessments will be used for upcoming report cards and will also help me identify our reading groups as we begin "Guided Reading" in a couple weeks. Look for more information to come on how these groups will work in the coming weeks.

Our Continuous Study of Trees

In Kindergarten, we will be studying trees throughout the year. This is a part of our FOSS Science curriculum. Trees are living things, but how do we know that? The kindergarten students came up with a K-W-L chart while we studied the trees. The K stands for "What we already KNOW." The W stands for "What we WANT to know or find out." The L stands for "What we LEARNED in the investigating process."

Here are some of the trees we looked at and journaled about back at the beginning of October......

Then by November the leaves were gone.....

As the winter months continue and we move into Spring, we will continue to see what happens with the trees and see how they change as the seasons change.
