Language Arts



Unit 5: Make Connections/Make Inferences

  • Letter(s): Pp
  • Phonics:
    • Identify the sound /p/
    • Associate the letter Pp with the sound /p/
    • Blend CVC words
    • Listen for words that rhyme and suggest pairs of words that rhyme
    • Spell CVC words using p and letters previously learned
  • Sight Words: the, many, them

  • Make inferences using what they see in pictures and read in text
  • Make connections with pictures and text
  • Use clues/evidence in text to make inferences
  • Practice strategies for analyzing questions and finding answers and
  • clues and evidence in text
  • Answer text-dependent inference questions
  • Create an inference graphic organizer (whole group and in centers)

Writing/Concepts of Print (week 13)

Journals: Capitalize I
  • Understand that the pronoun I is always an uppercase letter
  • Use end punctuation
  • Write CVC and high-frequency words
  • Understand that a sentence begins with an uppercase letter, has spaces between words, and can end with a period or exclamation point


Language Arts Home Practice Lesson 5.1 (COMING SOON!) (Will come home on Friday, January 29 in Friday Folders. We send home the practice sheets after we have worked on the content in class.)
  • PLEASE work on this with your child 2-3 times a week for at least 10 minutes. We need YOU as a partner in helping your child become fluent with letter recognition, sound, and sight words. Thanks!

Centers this week include:

Read to Self: . Students choose books from their personalized book bags. Students read books based on their specific reading level, although some books are slightly above and some are slightly below. These books are updated every 1-2 weeks. Students also work in guided reading groups with Mrs. Koepp.

iPad Read to Self/Read to Others: students use Raz Kids to listen to a story, read a story, and answer comprehensive questions about the story. Students can also read a story with their partner or on their own. After students read 1-2 stories, they will also have the option to work in Dream Box or Scratch Jr.

Word Work: students can choose to play roll a word, CVC word memory, CVC word puzzle, rhyme time, or a variety of other CVC/sight word based games. This week we will also introduce some fun word blocks that can be used to create sentences, along with CVC word cubes that allow students to create a variety of words ending in -am, -an, -at, -in, -it, etc...

Work on Writing: Students will work on writing the letter Pp. They will circle their best work and be encouraged to discuss their work on Seesaw. We will also be introducing class journals in which students can choose a class journal to work in after they finish handwriting...some options include a sports journal, food journal, friends journal, vacation journal, toy journal

Listen To Reading: coming soon!

Math Journal Center: Students can choose any page in their Unit 1-3 math journal to work on. Their goal is to finish 3 pages. They will be encouraged to take pictures and explain their work on Seesaw.

    • 4.1: Numbers 1-10 and Math Stories: Grocery Store Scene
      • Objectives: establish links between math and the real world
      • Vocabulary: story problem
    • 4.2: Find Partners of 10
      • Objectives: identify sets of partners for numbers 2 through 6
      • Vocabulary: partner
    • 4.3: Teen Numbers and Equations
      • Objectives: show teen numbers as a ten and extra ones; show teen numbers as 10 + a 1-digit number
      • Vocabulary: equal sign, plus sign, equation
    • 4.4: Addition and Subtraction Stories: Grocery Store Scenario 
      • Objectives: explore addition and subtraction in buying and selling experiences; express addition and subtraction story problems in drawings and expressions; practice repeating patterns
      • Vocabulary: addition, total, subtraction, plus sign, minus sign
